Japan’s Turn to Indonesian Broiler Segment Could Bring $200 Million
INDONESIA – The first Indonesian chicken shipments in 10 years have been welcomed as an endorsement of quality and what could be worth US$200 million to the industry annually. This is good news for global commodities giant, Cargill, and Indonesian food group, PT Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk, according to Today Online.
The article sees this as something of a shake-up to a market traditionally dominated by Thailand.
Japan stopped Indonesian imports due to avian influenza but was forced to open its doors to diversified supplies due to Asian bird flu scares elsewhere. Last year, Japan poultry imports were worth $1.3 billion.
Although Indonesian quantities accounted for less than one per cent of Japan’s total poultry imports in 2003, prior to the ban, Indonesian poultry exports are currently “negligible”.
