Japan stopped Indonesian imports due to avian influenza but was forced to open its doors to diversified supplies due to Asian bird flu scares elsewhere. Last year, Japan poultry imports were worth $1.3 billion.
Although Indonesian quantities accounted for less than one per cent of Japan’s total poultry imports in 2003, prior to the ban, Indonesian poultry exports are currently “negligible”.
