A further ten plants await approval after a recent statement from the Malaysian veterinary services opened doors to the agri-business giant’s Amparo plant in Sao Paulo state.

According to the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (BAPA), the approval gives Brazilian poultry access to almost 30 million Muslims.

BAPA said the decision comes after “years of negotiations”.

“This is an achievement that internationally values the Brazilian production capacity of halal meat for the most demanding markets,” said BAPA chief executive Fransciso Turra.

“This is the first of a series of qualifications that we hope will naturally happen."
