Vaccine Possible Following Important Disease Breakthrough
US – Researchers have found out how an important cause of lameness and mortality in broilers is caused, with vaccine development flagged as the next step.North Carolina State University research discovered that enterococcal spondylitis, also known as ‘kinky back’, is caused by enterococcus cerocum.
The organism travels through the bloodstream, attacking the vertebrae, after entering the broiler through the intestinal tract at an early age.
The US Poultry and Egg Association said: “Enterococcal spondylitis, usually called kinky back in the broiler industry, is an important cause of lameness and mortality in many broiler companies.”
