More Layers Dead as Avian Flu Spreads in Nigeria

By: The outbreaks were of the H5N1 subtype, and all four involved layers of different ages between 20 and 60 weeks.
There were 668 deaths from the disease out of a susceptible population of 3600. The remaining birds were destroyed to prevent the disease spreading.
The disease report to the World Organisation of Animal Health (OIE) commented that the one farm and three backyard operations involved displayed poor biosecurity.
The outbreaks took place in the Lagos and Rivers regions.
