Delair Bolis speaks to ThePoultrySite's Sarah Mikesell at IPPE in late January about global drivers in the poultry industry.

"What is driving from the production point of view is disease control, especially in part because of avian influenza that is spreading around the world, and second is high production costs based on the high cost of corn which has been increasing in the last month and the tendency is to continue increasing," Mr. Bolis said.

Concerning consumers, he said they are much more interested in how the industry is producing chickens and eggs, and they want to know their food is being produced responsibly and with the commitment that they expect, especially when it comes to antibiotic free and the well being of the animals.

"It's not only from farm to fork but it's becoming more important every day to be able to understand and to deliver from fork to farm - this is what is driving the high tendency of the poultry industry today," he said.

At MSD Animal Health, Mr. Bolis said they are close to their customers, the end user, and are present with employees on the ground in 57 countries. Their team is providing expertise on disease control and diagnostics and helping customers produce more at a lower cost.

Another area of expertise for MSD to helping customers gain market access, and understanding new trends and consumer driven solutions for the poultry industry.

"The key driver here is leading with prevention," he said. "Our animals, they have the right to be free of disease, and that's exactly why we are here - really to help our customers in preventing disease and to maximize the real performance that the chickens are capable of."

At their International Production and Processing Expo (IPPE) booth, MSD invited attendees to their Step Up to Solutions area to have one-on-one conversations with experts on issues such as diagnostics, animal well being, poultry economics, market access, respiratory health, in-ovo and early nutrition, water quality and intestinal health.

"We also have 52 technical managers around the world, and they are trained and educated to help make our customers' business more profitable and more relevant with these new tendencies in the industry," Mr. Bolis said.
