Antibiotic Use in Dutch Chickens Declines Further
NETHERLANDS - Use of antibiotics in chickens in the Netherlands has been further reduced in the first half of 2016, according to NEPLUVI, the Dutch association of poultry meat producing companies.Compared to the base year, 2009, antibiotics use in chickens has declined by 71 per cent. In the first half of 2016 alone, antibiotics use decreased by 18 per cent compared to 2015.
It is unclear to what extent the use of antibiotics contributes to the problems of antibiotic-resistant infections in humans. NEPLUVI said the poultry sector has taken its responsibility by reducing their use in recent years, but a recently adopted new plan of action should reduce antibiotics use even further.
