OIE Reports Newcastle Disease Outbreak in Bulgaria

By: The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on Monday, 4 September.
The outbreak was initially observed on 1 September in backyard birds, and confirmed on the same date after a real-time PCR test was conducted at the National Reference Laboratory for avian influenza and Newcastle disease.
According to the report, a total of 1370 birds were found susceptible, out of which 157 birds were affected and killed as a result. The remaining 1213 birds were killed and disposed of.
The OIE, in conjunction with the Bulgarian veterinary authorities, have applied several control measures to ensure that there will be no more outbreaks of the disease in the region moving forward.
Although the issue has been resolved, and the OIE expects no further reports, the source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
