Egg Shortage Unlikely in Armenia Ahead of New Year Holidays
ARMENIA - No egg shortage is expected in Armenia, and prices for this product will stabilize soon, the Armenian agriculture ministry’s press office said Wednesday. The statement was made in response to recent media reports stating that the country is in want of eggs and that it is importing them to fill the gap and that as a result, egg prices have jumped.
According to ARKA News Agency, the ministry says Armenia’s egg output will increase a great deal after the first ten days of December.
It is expected to reach 2,700 boxes of eggs a day, while daily consumption in the country is only 2,200 boxes today.
It means the output will fully cater for the population’s demand ahead of New Year holidays.
Domestic output shrank in November because the import of hatching eggs was ceased for quarantine, and this has driven egg prices up at domestic market.
The state anti-trust agency said after monitoring the market that prices for one egg are ranging now from 65 to 70 drams ($0.13 to 0.14).
This means that prices went by two or three drams up ($0.004 - $0.006), compared with the previous month.
To fill the gap, the egg-producing companies are now importing this product from Russia.
Appropriate agencies will continue monitoring the market.
According to the National Statistical Service, prices for eggs in October 2017 went down 4.7 per cent over one year, but rose 3.3 per cent over one month.
