The scientific programme features more than 150 presentations and case reports on topics including infectious diseases, intestinal health, food safety, diagnostics, immunology, epidemiology, flock management and biosecurity. There also will be more than 100 posters.

A few programme highlights:

• AAAP Hall of Honor inductee Oscar Fletcher, DVM, PhD, who retired last year following a 50-year career in avian medicine and 12 years as the dean of the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, will kick off the meeting on Friday morning with a keynote address about cases from his career.

• On Saturday evening, the AAAP’s new Avian Women’s Network is hosting a reception featuring guest speaker Martha Maznevski, PhD, professor of organisational behavior and faculty director for executive education at Ivey. She will talk with the group about leadership styles and working in a male-dominated industry.

• There are two additional keynote speakers on Sunday: Andrick Payen Diaz De la Vega, an analyst with Rabobank RaboResearch Food and Agribusiness, and Randall Singer, DVM, PhD, University of Minnesota, who will talk about quantifying antimicrobial use in poultry production.

• On Monday, Jean Guard, DVM, PhD, veterinary medical officer for the USDA Agricultural Research Service, will present a timely keynote lecture, “Sex and the Single Salmonella: What We Don’t Know Hurts Us.”

• Moving to respiratory disease, Naola Ferguson-Noel, DVM, PhD, associate professor at the University of Georgia, will deliver a keynote, “Evaluation of the Impact of Mycoplasma synoviae Infection on the Efficacy of Infectious Laryngotracheitis CEO Vaccination in Broiler Chickens.”

• Kakambi Nagaraja, MVSc, BVSc, PhD, University of Minnesota, will present the AAAP Lasher-Eckroade History Lecture with a talk, “Pullorum Disease: Evolution of the Eradication Strategy.”

As usual, the AAAP meeting is scheduled concurrently with the annual meeting of the American Veterinary Medical Association, which will be meeting nearby at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
