Large-scale producers dominate China's yellow broiler market
Smaller farms continue to exitLarge-scale producers of yellow chicken meat in China held steady in 2024, maintaining stable production despite market shifts, according to a recent US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) report.
Higher efficiency and lower costs allowed major players to avoid the setbacks faced by smaller producers. In some cases, large producers reported higher profits than in 2023.
Industry sources suggest that expansion is on the horizon, with large producers eyeing northern China as a new production base. While yellow broiler farming has traditionally been centred in the south, land constraints and the potential for market development in the north are driving this shift.
The larger population of parent-generation broilers in 2024 ensures that commercial production will be well supplied in 2025. However, smaller producers, unable to compete with large-scale operations, continue to cut production or exit the market entirely. This decline in small-scale farming is the key factor behind the overall drop in yellow broiler production this year.
With industry consolidation underway, the future of yellow chicken production will likely be shaped by the expansion strategies of large producers and the evolving demand in northern China.
